Chapter 19

“I could read the will in its entirety, but I think we can leave a proper will reading for when all the recipients are present?” Simmons stared down everyone in the room, Peter’s side of the family and then Mum’s. “What is in dispute is the heir designation, and I’d like to address that first.”

Everyone was sitting in leather lounge chairs inside the massive library, Simmons’ briefcase lying open on a long coffee table.

“The way the family fortunes were managed under your mother and grandmother’s reign was that each of her children were entitled to a set amount of money as an annual income. She allowed more at times on a discretionary basis, approving things such as extra funds for the children’s education.”

Everyone was nodding along so far, everyone in Peter’s side of the family at least.

“Judy has not taken funds from the estate for herself since she became married to Dennis.” A tight nod from Mum. “She accepted money to pay for the girl’s private schooling and Morgan’s medical treatment.”

Uh-oh. Blood in the water… Eyes watched me take a long slug from my drink, Kylie skolling hers and pouring us another.

“But apart from that, she has opted to operate independently from the estate.”

“And will do so going forward,” Mum said, staring at everyone in the room. “I’ll be on the plane by nightfall, and I won’t return. I’ve done as I was asked. It’s done, all of it.”

“Of course,” Simmons continued mildly. “If you wish to sever financial ties with the estate, I can draw up the papers for you.”

“I do.”

Peter nodded at that, but was it approvingly or just in acknowledgment? I couldn’t tell.

“Now, Peter, as the money gifted to you by the estate makes up the vast majority of your family income, I’m assuming you will not be making the same choice as your sister?”

“Definitely not,” Peter said with an affronted expression.

“Then unfortunately, we have a problem.” Simmons, this guy should’ve been an actor in a Merchant Ivory production or something. He had that whole elegant, ‘I am about to fuck you up and you won’t even know’ thing they always deploy in drawing room dramas. He sat back in this chair, resting his laced together fingers on his chest.

The needle is just about to drop, I thought.

“You see, it is a term of the will that any attempts to contest it invalidates any current claims to the estate. You may employ lawyers, contest the contents of the will, but by doing so, you lose your existing yearly income. If your claim is upheld, you get control of the estate, but if you don’t…”

Simmons’ hands went wide.

“You either think you have an incredibly strong legal case and can pay the legal fees from your own pocket to contest the will but you won’t receive a cent from the estate until you’ve taken control of it, or the will remains uncontested and a yearly income will be paid into your accounts, as per usual.”

Peter settled back into his chair, but he was anything but relaxed.
